Robert Alda
Robert Alda’s career started in vaudeville, as a singer-dancer. Graduating to performing on radio and in burlesque, he made a showy movie debut as George Gershwin in Rhapsody in Blue. His movie career stumbled fairly after that, but he had much bigger success on the Broadway stage in such productions as “Guys and Dolls” and “What Makes Sammy Run.” Locating in Rome in the early 1960s, he appeared in many Italian and European movies over the following 15 years. When many of them were quite booming in Europe, some made it to the USA.
Robert Alda took architecture at NYU, shortly working in this field until taking show business. He began performing in vaudeville and in burlesque as a tenor and straight man. By 1934, he was well established on radio. He made an outstanding movie debut in Warner Bros.’ 1945 biopic Rhapsody in Blue (1945), seeking the role of George Gershwin over the protests of director Irving Rapper, who’d wanted to hold off production until Tyrone Power was available. Alda did as good a job as possible, given the banalities of the scripts, though his piano-playing series are definitely faked and tricked up. Alda’s leading career faded out quite rapidly; he was more fortunate with second leads and wicked roles and in the early 1960s became a fixture of Italian sword-and-sandal and spy films. Returning to Broadway in 1950, Alda made the role of Sky Masterson in Guys and Dolls, winning a Tony Award. In 1954, he starred in the syndicated TV series, Secret File USA.
Robert Alda is the father of Alan Alda. Although Alan Alda, with whom he appeared in a poignant MASH TV episode of the late 1970s. Robert Alda divorced Joan Browne when his son Alan Alda was still growing up. Robert Alda continued married to his second wife, Flora until he died on 3 May 1986. Robert Alda and Flora had one son together: Antony Alda, film and television actor like his stepbrother.

Michigan Central Station
Designed by the famous architects that also designed the Grand Central Station in New York City, Michigan Central Station opened Dec 26, 1913. The station was to be officially dedicated Jan 4, 1914, but a fire that demolished the last station, the Michigan Central Railroad Depot on Third Street and Jefferson Avenue, pushed Michigan Central Station into service early to avoid a disturbance of service.
Besides the arcade and waiting room, the station had a restaurant with rounded ceilings, a main hall with copper skylights, and a lunch counter.
Since the Michigan Central Station was being used less often, an initiative to sell the station in 1956 failed, as did another initiative in 1963. A decision was taken in 1967 to close the main waiting room entrance. Soon later, the restaurant and the businesses in the arcade closed. In 1975, the main waiting room entrance was reopened and three years later renovation started that replaced track, cleaned the building and added a bus terminal. Recognized at the time as Penn Central Station, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 16, 1975.
The building was traded in 1984 to make a transportation center that never happened. City building inspectors have suggested that it should be destroyed since at least 1994, but such pressures stopped in 2001 after its owner said it would be reconstructed, designing to turn it into an international trade and customs center. That naturally, never happened. Michigan Central Station’s owner, Matty Maroun has said that until there is a renter and a deal found to modernize the property, he will not spend any significant money.
In January 2005, the station was appeared as a cameo in a futuristic film titled “The Island.” Its director, Michael Bay, also gave Michigan Central Station a major role in the climatic ultimate battle of his movie “Transformers.”
